History leading up to hospitalization at Matsui Hospital
[Around 2017] Occupation: Electrical maintenance worker at a chemical plant
He worked in the factory every day wearing a helmet, which he also wore a headlamp, earplugs, goggles, and other safety equipment, and felt a weight on his head and neck.
Due to the nature of his job, he often worked at heights and in confined spaces, and often hit his head.
Gradually, he began to feel pain in his neck, and started to suffer from headaches, nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain, and numbness in his hands. He visited an orthopedic surgeon, who diagnosed him with a bone spur in his neck, but found that it would not interfere with his daily life. He was prescribed a compress and painkiller, but the symptoms did not subside, so he visited a neurosurgeon and had a CT scan, which showed no abnormalities. After that, he went to an osteopathic clinic on the recommendation of a colleague, but it did not have much effect.Originally disgusted by the uncertainty about the company's future and his boss's non-confrontational attitude, he came to believe that it was caused by stress, but as he began to feel unwell and began taking more time off work, the company's industrial physician instructed him to go to an affiliated psychiatric clinic, so he did.
Based on the results of psychological and developmental tests, the doctor diagnosed him with a developmental disorder (ASD), but the explanation he received was not very convincing, so he decided to quit due to his distrust of the company he had worked for up to that point.
At the end of July 2018, he quit the company he had worked for for about 10 years.
[August to October 2018]
Occupation: Large-scale hospital equipment staff member
Relieved of the stress he felt at his previous job, he started working at his new workplace with a fresh start, but one day after driving a company car, he began to feel pain in his neck, and the next day he developed a strong headache, nausea, dizziness and was unable to go to work.
Because I had moved to a different location due to a job change, I went to a new orthopedic clinic where I was diagnosed with degenerative cervical spondylosis. I was prescribed a patch and painkillers, but it didn't help, so I was advised to have an MRI at a large hospital. I underwent an MRI scan and a medical interview, but no major abnormalities were found. In the end, I was unable to work the required number of days and ended up quitting at the end of my probationary period.
[April 2019 - November 2023]
Occupation: Food factory equipment maintenance worker
I was recuperating at home for the time being, but as my health gradually improved, I was able to return to work. Since my health never returned to what it was before, I was able to work while taking occasional holidays.
When he was infected with COVID-19 in July 2022, he continued to have a high fever of around 40 degrees and a cough, but due to the spread of the infection, government support was not functioning properly, and he was recuperating at home for about three weeks.
Although his fever subsided, he had a severe cough and was constantly short of breath and fatigued, so he visited a respiratory medicine department and was diagnosed with "bronchial asthma" after examination. Although he was able to continue working by taking medication, his condition gradually worsened and he began to have palpitations, so he visited a cardiology department, but the test results showed no abnormalities.
Since then, I have been unable to sleep properly and have become mentally exhausted, so I visited a different psychosomatic clinic and was diagnosed with depression. I was able to sleep after taking medication, but my physical condition did not improve and I had to take a leave of absence from work.
After recovering at home, my condition improved somewhat and my leave of absence expired, so I returned to work. However, one day, I started to feel pain in my neck while at work. I managed to finish work that day, and when I went to get changed in the locker room, I suddenly lost consciousness and about an hour had passed when I woke up. After that, I started to feel unwell again, and decided that I could not continue working any more, so I quit my job.
[December 2023 - September 2024]
I was recuperating at home while visiting a respiratory medicine and psychosomatic medicine clinic, but I noticed that my physical condition was gradually becoming unstable. When I told the psychosomatic medicine doctor about this, I was diagnosed with "bipolar disorder type II" and started taking new medication. To be honest, I didn't feel that it was effective, but I tried to continue taking it as long as possible.
At the end of January 2024, the neck pain recurred, and I was managing it with a compress and painkillers, when by chance I came across the Tokyo Neurological Center website on the Internet and filled out a questionnaire. I found that 16 out of 30 questions applied to me. Looking back on my past, I remembered that I had experienced neck pain at various times, and thought that maybe it was a stiff neck, so I made an appointment to see a doctor a month later.
On the day, after an autonomic nerve test and an MRI, he was examined by Director Matsui and diagnosed with "stiff neck disease." After receiving electrical therapy and acupuncture treatment at the adjacent Sukkiri Center Toranomon, he noticed that the discomfort he had been feeling in his neck had disappeared. After returning to Osaka, he began to visit the Sukkiri Center Osaka three times a week, and although he had previously fallen ill after raising his SSP to the standard level, he felt that his condition was improving after the treatment.
However, after two days, my condition would sometimes worsen again, and although I felt that the treatment was effective, my condition still fluctuated. At the end of March 2024, the Osaka Sukkiri Center closed, so I started going to an acupuncture clinic I knew, but although my condition improved temporarily after treatment, there was not much change, so I started to go to Neck Therapy Takamatsu by express bus on days when I felt well, but taking into account my physical condition, time, and financial considerations, I began to think about switching to inpatient treatment.
When I was examined by Dr. Hara at Neck Therapy Takamatsu, I inquired about hospitalization, and was told that I could be admitted at this time with no waiting time, so I made the decision on the spot.
After being admitted to Matsui Hospital
I decided to stop taking my depression medication and focus on my treatment immediately after being admitted. I was able to receive treatment twice a day, in the morning and evening, on weekdays, and perhaps because I had already been going to the hospital and had raised my SSP and Topra levels to the standard, after two weeks the headaches, nausea, fatigue, and shortness of breath I had been feeling disappeared, and I no longer felt any fluctuations in my physical condition. After one month, the mental discomforts such as irritability and anxiety disappeared, and I was able to sleep soundly, something I had never experienced before. Before being admitted to hospital, I felt intense pain when Dr. Hara palpated my muscles, but that has also disappeared. I still have stiff shoulders, but since they are not interfering with my daily life, I have decided to be discharged earlier than my planned three-month stay.
Thoughts after treatment
I have been to many hospitals, but I was very lucky to finally come across a medical institution that can cure me. I learned that many people, regardless of gender or age, suffer from this disease. I sincerely hope that many more patients will be saved by electrical neck treatment in the future, and that more people will become aware of stiff neck disease.
Thank you very much for all your help this time.
